Research for Research

(English)

Research for Research gathers a series of essays on twentieth century urbanism by participants of the Berlage Institute. All of them try to understand these projects as readings of the existing cities they were meant for and as answers to the problems the designers perceived. They focus on the research rather than on the visionary character of the proposals. In many ways, this collection of essays sheds a new and surprising light on the process of modernization that brought so many changes to our cities in the twentieth century. Also, they suggest a history of urban planning as a history of research. Last but not least they give us some clues about what a contemporary research program might look like and what is needed to turn it into a method of design. Bart Lootsma and Mariette van Stralen tutored the project in 2003-2004.
